In a race to the bottom in terms of cost and efficiency, the shipping industry continues to embrace the use of large container ships to transport goods from one continent to another. A recent report by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) found that the largest container ships operating today are over 300 meters long and can accommodate up to 30,000 20-foot containers. They are able to travel at speeds of up to 26 knots (over 43mph). They are also able to carry up to 2,300 tons of cargo. In comparison, a family car carries only 1,000kg.
